What Is Your Life Like With An ICD?
How is it using power tools, guitar amps, flying, going through metal detectors, etc.?
Hi Harry,
Got mine 4 months ago. My biggest issue has been sleeping, especially on my left side where the ICD was inserted. It's also created alot of anxiety, fear of being shocked as I love my exercise. What has your experience been?
With regards to what you shouldn't do. Here are the 3 biggest items that i'm aware of.
1. Avoid arc welders at all cost. The electrical signals generated by arc welders may interfere with the proper function of ICDs, S-ICDs, CRT-Ds, CRT-Ps or pacing systems. This interference may have the potential to be interpreted by the device as electrical noise or as electrical activity of the heart.
2. Don't stand near the metal detector any longer than is necessary. Don't lean against the structure of the system. If scanning with a handheld metal detector is necessary, tell the security personnel that you have an ICD or pacemaker, and request an alternative form of inspection, such as a pat down. Your should have been given a card with your ICD that you can give to airport/security personel that gives details, serial number and contact details for verification. Most aiport/security personel know about these cards. They wont ask you to walk through the metal detectors if you show the card.
3. Don't dangle headphones round your neck or within 3cm (1in) of your ICD. Don't put mobile or cordless phones, or MP3 players within 15cm (6in) of your ICD. Don't wear magnetic fasteners near your ICD. Don't use a TENS machine for pain relief, and keep electric-pulse body-toning tools below your stomach.
Regards,
Pieter
I have not gotten one yet. It keeps getting postponed. My EF has gone to 30% from 15% in a year and a half. I am very anxious about it. Thanks for all the input.
Pieter, I was not aware of the headphones. I was told by my cardiologist that having a cellphone near was ok, but you never know. I wish there was a way that an ICD can be taken out if your EF improve. The EF could decrease again though 😔.
I don't chance any metal detectors I just show them my ICD card and get a pat down
Thank you. I am on the list to get one.
