Several times a night I wake up feeling like I am 'QUAKING" . Is this Afib/Aflutter? It lasts from a few seconds to a couple minutes. Per the nurse I cut out caffeine but it hasn't helped. If anything it is worse. I also have congestive heart failure. I take Plavix. I had unknown origin internal bleeding and had crit counts of 5.8 and 6.0, hospitalized twice for transfusions of blood and iron, but am still anemic. I have bi-lateral knee replacements, but due to several injuries to the right… read more

May I presume you're seeing specialists?

I just had an ablation, 2 weeks ago, for atrial fibrillation and flutter (4-1/2 hrs in surgery). I am actually in sinus rhythm for over 2 weeks now -- the first time, this many consecutive days in years!

(I also had my aortic valve replaced 13 months ago.)

I see several specialists for the various issues I have, by the way.

I have found we have to be our own advocates, mostly, but a family or friend can also help. (My local medical group has a patient care department, and they help advocate, as well.)

I am 71, and in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest of America.

Are you on anti-arrythmia meds and blood thinners, then?

I, too had a watchman put in which took me off of Warfarin. I have no issues. Was born and raised in the Northwest. Raised a family, remarried and moved to Montana, I have had 2 ablation since I moved here. One in 2012 and 2022, the latter one with afib lasted 4 weeks and very painful. Prior to that I was in and out quite often. I have been on an a afib medicine for quite sometime. After the last ablation I was able to stop the storage but afib came back so finally restart it. And doing great, trying to be more active but do fall more than I like.

It sounds like you've been through quite a bit with your AFib/Aflutter. Here are some key points from the knowledge base that might be relevant to your situation:

Treatments for Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
1. Cardioversion:
- Medicated Cardioversion: Uses antiarrhythmic drugs to reset heart rhythm.
- Electrical Cardioversion: Uses electric paddles or patches to deliver shocks to reset the heart rhythm.

2. Surgical Treatment Options:
- Catheter Ablation: Involves inserting catheters to destroy cells in the atrium that cause arrhythmia using extreme cold, radiofrequency waves, or heat.
- Maze Procedure: Often requires open-heart surgery to create lines of scar tissue in the atrium.
- Atrioventricular (AV) Node Ablation: Targets the AV node to control heart rate.
- Left Atrial Appendage Closure: Aims to reduce stroke risk by closing off the left atrial appendage.

Devices
- Pacemaker: Helps regulate heartbeats, especially if the heart tends to stop and start.
- Watchman Device: Used to close off the left atrial appendage to prevent blood clots and reduce stroke risk.

Additional Notes
- Catheter Ablation: Can be initially successful, but AFib may recur, requiring additional procedures or alternative treatments.

Your combination of treatments and devices is designed to manage your heart rhythm and reduce the risk of complications. Always consult with your cardiologist to tailor the best treatment plan for your specific condition.
