Does Anyone Here Have A Bicuspid Heart Valve?

A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Edmore, MI

I was diagnosed with a bicuspid heart valve. I was told at 48 years old that I was born with it.
I never even knew I had anything wrong with my heart until then.
What information can you share with me?

@A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member, I just joined this site a few days ago. I am not an ambassador on this site. I am an ambassador on another myhealthteam.com site called myhivteam. We try to keep conversations in check to the question put forward. We try to help people find the resources they need (if we can), and we share news or articles that might be important to people. I've been an ambassador on myhivteam since 2016. I think I was the very first ambassador to any of the myhealthteam sites, I could be wrong, but was definitely the first on myhivteam. So we just try to help people and welcome them when we can, keep conversations to the point, redirect conversations if they get too far off the topic, and just try to be the best team leaders we can be.

I had a bicuspid stenotic aortic valve. In July of 2019 I had it replaced with a pig valve. My brother found out he had the same thing and had it replaced 2 weeks after I did. He recovered beautifully but 4 months after my surgery I developed sepsis and endocarditis. I was misdiagnosed at the ED and even though I had fevers of 103-104 they told me I had a virus and sent me home. They told me to follow up with my GP who left the practice while I was in the hospital. I could't find a doctor to see me. My cardiologist was on vacation. I had a string of bad luck. I was a nurse and finally after 3 weeks of running high fevers I called a friend what was a doctor and he called my cardiologist who was just getting home and she met me immediately and I was admitted and blood culture were drawn. My blood cultures turned positive in 4 hours. I had my valve replaced again and this time it was a human cadaver valve. My valve had dehisced and I had an abscess. I was a mess. I now have severe obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I had a ventral septal ablation and developed a complete heart block. I know have a pacemaker and defibrillator. Always remember to be your own advocate. My brothers surgery went beautifully and he is perfect. My story is not the normal story but I'm going to keep on fighting. I'm glad to be on your team. Tell me more about being an ambassador.
