Here are some recent news stories about gabapentin:
Overdose deaths
According to a CDC report, gabapentin was detected in almost 10% of overdose deaths in 23 states and the District of Columbia between 2019 and 2020. The number of overdose deaths involving gabapentin increased from 2019 to 2020, and officials ruled that gabapentin was a cause of death in almost 3,000 of those cases.
Respiratory depressant effects
The FDA has required new warning labels on gabapentinoids to alert patients about the potential for respiratory depression. Patients who use gabapentinoids alone or with other drugs that depress the central nervous system (CNS) are at an increased risk of serious breathing difficulties.
Stroke recovery
Research in mice suggests that gabapentin may help neurons on the undamaged side of the brain take up the signaling work of lost cells, which may enhance recovery of movement after a stroke.
Spinal cord injury
Research shows that gabapentin may reduce damage after spinal cord injury by blocking the inflammatory response in the spinal cord.
Withdrawal symptoms
Patients who take as little as 400 mg of gabapentin daily for three weeks may experience withdrawal symptoms that can begin within 12 hours of stopping the medication. These symptoms include anxiety, pain, nausea, fatigue, and restlessness.
I have arthritis everywhere & also double scoliosis which has gotten worse with age ( clothes drift to one side and everything falls off one shoulder). I have neuropathy and my left leg is atrophying. Seeing chiropractors since age 21. I was told with fusion the joints above and below go bad eventually, thus many have multiple surgeries and I opted out. I use Lidocaine patches now because of my heart, TENS and Tylenol. A proper massage helps if they are experienced. But inflammation remains a problem since can't take NSAIDS. I take fish oil-is supposed to help but can't confirm as don't want to stop. Cortisone shots. Go to PT when Dr will write the order. Zetia is causing same problems as the statins did-pain, restless legs, etc. Good luck. Let us know if you find something that works.
I did physical therapy for the C5-C7 DDD. It was causing numbness in left arm and tingling fingers. Also burning pain left side of my neck into the shoulder. Got to keep up with the exercises cause after my 16 sessions of PT and not doing the exercises at home doesn't take long for issues to return. I have Spondylosis in lumbar region which causes muscle spasms from doing something simple like Golfing. I use lidocaine patches 5%. Haven't tried the CBD balm but as long as it doesn't mess with my blood thinners I am open to any relief. I sometimes will just use heat to get blood circulating and then ice to help with the inflammation. I like you do not want to go with fusion as it may help but usually doesn't last according to a lot of VA buddies.
