@A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member Yes, my advice is to focus on what you can do and change, not on what you can not do.
When you focus on the positive things that you can control you train your brain to stop the negative thinking (we are all programmed toward worry and negative thinking by default). Changing your mindset takes some practice but I am proof that you can do it. I know the diagnosis of diastolic heart failure is a hard one but there is not much choice other than to focus on what you can change. I have this diagnosis too. Something that helps me is to make a T chart on one side put what is under your control (Lifestyle changes list them out, Medication..you get the idea) and on the other side what is not. That will help you to realize that there is a lot that you can control and do. Come to the Zoom support meeting on the 21st at 7 pm EST and talk with those of us who have faced the diagnosis of heart failure It will give you some perspective and encouragement. ❤️

Dealing with the anxiety of a new diagnosis, such as diastolic heart failure, can be challenging. Here are some practical tips based on my knowledge base:

- Organize Information: Keep all your medical documents, pamphlets, and visit summaries in one place. This can help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.
- List Questions: Write down any questions you have for your healthcare provider in a dedicated notebook or on your smartphone. This ensures you remember to ask them during appointments.
- Active Coping Strategies: Engage in activities that help you manage your health, such as creating a plan or getting organized. This can improve your mental and emotional well-being.
- Seek Social Support: Connect with others who have similar conditions through support groups or online communities like MyHeartDiseaseTeam. Sharing experiences can provide comfort and practical advice.
- Manage Stress: Identify and practice stress management techniques that work for you, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle physical activities.

Remember, it's normal to feel a range of emotions, and seeking support from friends, family, or mental health professionals can be very beneficial.

SueWest- the anxiety was the worst thing. It was like having PTSD, I jumped at the smallest thing which is not like me. Talk with people you are close to and trust. If you find "sayings" that help you (Bible scriptures, etc.) you can use these to quiet your nerves. I would say a childhood prayer to help me sleep- I live alone too- anything that helps you to center and calm yourself. I also watch one episode of a funny TV show before bed, one of the old shows like I Love Lucy or Everyone Loves Raymond. I often fall asleep before it's halfway through. A white noise machine helps many people and they are inexpensive. Learn what you can about your condition and how you can make changes. There are good videos on this site and caring people. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Take care of yourself.
