Is Heart Disease And Gum Disease Related? Is The Plaque Around Your Teeth And Gums The Same Plaque In Atherosclerosis Of Your Arteries?

A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

When I went to the dentist at thirty years old for a cavity to be filled, he said I was having the beginning of gum disease. I have had problems with my gums since my early thirties. My dad had gum disease when he was in his thirties and passed away with his third triple bypass at the age of 60. Is gum disease an inherited trait like heart disease which I have had since my mid-twenties?

I have to take 2 grams of amoxicillin exactly 1 hour before even a routine cleaning! I suspect it has more to do with my hip knee and shoulder replacement than anything else! I have been fortunate and Diligent with my teeth! My parents grew up during the Great Depression and there was no money for a trip to the Dentist so they made me Very aware of my teeth and Dental Hygiene so I brush and floss and use Mouthwash twice a day and sometimes use baking soda if I feel a grungy spot close to my routine cleaning appointment! And I go 3 times a year instead of two! I have all but one of my natural teeth and it was broken off below the gum line in an accident involving my TroyBilt Tiller! I have a permanent partial to take care of that and I do have some crowns and I’ve endured I root canal. But I was able to bypass braces much to my sisters chagrin!

According to Penn Medicine. "Researchers suspect that bacteria present in gum disease can travel throughout the body, triggering inflammation in the heart’s vessels and infection in heart valves.

This could affect a lot of people. A groundbreaking study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly half of American adults age 30 and older and 70 percent of those 65 and older have some stage of gum disease."

The plaque on our teeth is not like that found in the blood vessels. On our teeth is a bacterial film. The plaque in our arteries is a result of a deposit of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and scar tissue that develops in the artery wall. I hope this helps! Hugs

I hesitate to say simply because you may have no need for excess concern. That being said, I recall hearing that a person with lots of tar-tar and plaque should not have all the cleaning performed in one dental hygiene visit and should be given the opportunity to rinse and spit thoroughly while having this done, or rinsed and suctioned frequeny maybe better. This is because anything circulating in the mouth can follow in the bloodstream right away to the heart and cause a heart problem to occur. Whether there is a genetic connection between the heartand gum issue is an interesting question.
I know a lady who takes good care of her needs yet has had a depressing time with her dental health problems. She says that her Dad (or Granddad) had a very y difficult time with bad teeth and having to have teeth pulled.

My lovely wife has all her teeth at age 66. Her sister lost hers in her thirties. Her sister blames the loss on pregnancy, son absorbed all her calcium. My wife had two children without such issue. They had different fathers and the many differences are striking. That is a vote for genetics I feel. Hygiene alone is not enough in my mind. Regular checkups and expensive preventative and restorative processes are sometimes also necessary? 😎
