The doctor checks your ejection fraction and if its low and heart is not performing well you are diagnosed with Chronic Heart Failure.

There are several things that cause swollen ankles. From no big deal to serious conditions. I had an echo and EKG 5 years earlier when I was having edema in the ankles that came and went, depending on my salt intake. I managed my salt intake. My weight fluctuated. I was TIRED all the time. I had brain fog. I became short of breath, at times extreme. I was dizzy. I would loose my appetite at times. My legs were l wobbly and my balance was off. My son is a mechanical engineer and he told me my center of gravity was off d/t my weight. I bought several pair of shoes, had several pair of orthotics made. I had a reason for everything and I certainly wasn't thinking about heart failure. It crossed my mind, but I dismissed it and just thought, I'll lose weight. My BP was up one day, I was dizzy at home and I asked my husband to take it. I am a nurse, so I had a cuff handy. My husband was trained as an EMT in another life and he knew how to take it. My mother was at home with mini strokes and they told her at 60 she needed a heart transplant. Her dad died at 40, just dropped dead. I referred myself yo a cardiologist and lucked out with 2 great ones. They did a PET scan after giving me iv meds to induce a stress test, though I was laying flat. It was bad, showing my heart working at half capacity. Then they did an MRI which showed the same. My keg showed a bundle branch block .
No one wants to believe they are ill. It was so gradual, i was able to justify all my symptoms, which were classic heart failure symptoms. I saw several primary care Drs. They said it was my knees arthritic, didn't feel my no was high enough yo treat, my keg was bizarre, they blamed the machine anfpd their technition and ignored it. My last dr said he didn't know why my legs were swollen and it was probably salt.
You have to listen to your body and advocate for yourself. Had I not recognized my symptoms as like my mothers, remembering things she said over the years, I would probably be in the same boat.
All my symptoms came and went and not all together so it was easy to dismiss. They were classic heart failure symptoms. My anxiety was really high and I'm sure it was partly lack of oxygen. I forgot everything. I could keep up with conversations when I was quick whitted before. A lot of little things.
That's what I can share. I hope this helps. ,

I have had a heart condition since I was in my mid-twenties but had not connected my shortness of breath and putting on five lbs. overnight as congestive heart failure. I went on a Sunday afternoon to our small town's ER. They checked my oxygen content, and it was down to 70%. They sent me for an echo which had gone from 55% to 20% over a six- month period. My cardiologist did a heart cath that showed I needed a triple bypass. So, I was transferred to a university hospital where I had my heart surgery early the next day. That all happened the end of April 22, but after the successful operation, cardiac rehab, and many prayers, I am feeling so much better. My echo fraction has now gone from 20% to 40%. My cardiologist has changed my medication to a beta blocker and now I take Lasix.
Please try not to get too stressed out but follow your doctor's advice. Do not give up, just keep going forward.
