Has Anyone Been With Permanent Afib For Over A Year Continuesly? Did It Ever Convert To Normal Sinus Rhythm On Its Own?

A MyHeartDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

Since I had my ICD replaced a year ago, I've been in afib non stop, it's asymptomatic, but get an episode with symptoms occasionally.
At my age of 83, I don't want to have ablation or convertion procedures.
Is there any other way it can be converted to normal sinus rhythm.
I appreciate any feedback.

Hi Deanna, I'm in the same situation as you're in. I just turned 83, I'm in continues afib but asymptomatic, occasionally I would have afib episodes with symptoms.
My cardiologist is not recommending any procedures, just meds to control heart rate, blood pressure and blood thinner, also diuretic. Limit sodium and water intake.
They seem to be working for me.
I hope your condition gets better.
Take it easy.

After having a pacemaker put in, 2 mitraclips on leaky valves in my heart, ablation, conversions ---I was told they couldn't do any more---and would be in A-fib ALL the time. I am 82--will be 83 in April. I have to pace myself--get tired- sometimes dizzy and KNOW I have to sit-- rest--for awhile. Any one else experience this? And how do you handle it??

Permanent atrial fibrillation (AFib) is diagnosed when the condition persists continuously and is not expected to return to normal sinus rhythm without intervention. While spontaneous conversion to normal rhythm is rare in permanent AFib, it can happen in some cases, especially if the underlying cause resolves. However, at 83 and asymptomatic, your focus might be on managing symptoms and stroke risk rather than rhythm conversion. Medications like rate control drugs or anticoagulants may be options to discuss with your doctor.
